ChoGBlog is committed to providing commentary pertaining to the Church of God movement (Anderson, Indiana), with the intent of provoking constructive discussion on key issues related to our theology, mission and practice, within broad contexts. The hope is that our emphases on holiness and unity will become more meaningful and practical for the complex world in which we live.

This is a new venture, building off the original blog that I had in place up until 2015. Also, note that this is not connected with another similarly named blog that came into existence around that same time.

DISCLAIMERS: This blog represents my own views, and not necessarily any congregation or organization with which I am involved. About Me

This collection of writings is the work of someone with deep roots in and strong passion for the Church of God movement.

I am a third-generation Chogger with a pedigree coming from both sides of my family tree. My maternal grandfather pastored several congregations, and my parents were devoted to raise me to love Jesus, participate actively in our local congregation, and take on the DNA of our movement. My education included two Church of God colleges, culminating in a Doctor of Ministry degree from Anderson University. I have been an ordained minister for 36+ years.

My vocational ministry experience has been entirely within the Church of God, and includes congregational pastoral ministry (in both the United States and Canada), church planting, college teaching, and extensive time as a Regional Pastor. Currently, I lead a network of missional communities within the Church of God, and as I phase into retirement am searching out many new ways to support the church.

I currently live in Fresno, California, close to our three sons and their families, which include five grandchildren. My wife Kathy and I have been married for 40+ years.

I firmly believe that the best way to get to know and understand someone is to sit down with them and have a respectful discussion. If you really want to understand what makes me tick, let’s find some time to talk in person or online. I’d love to hear your story too.

The Rationale

You may be wondering why I am using Substack and have a paid subscription tier.

In short, the Internet is a toxic place. The experience from regular blogs and social media reveals that it is far too easy for readers to make “drive-by” comments without really identifying themselves or thoroughly engaging with the author and his/her content. Subscriptions bring a higher level of involvement and accountability. Implementing a paid tier helps ensure that the people who want to enter into the discussion (something I want!) do so because they are committed to being here and the overall objectives of this newsletter. While I will post many free articles, as a bonus to paid subscribers some content will be available only to them. (Please note: I wish I could charge a lower base fee, but Substack’s minimum rate makes this impossible).

You are certainly welcome to subscribe for free, and check things out. You can upgrade to a nominal paid tier once you discover the value of the content and want to engage in the community.

NOTE: If your finances truly prevent you from fully participating, contact me. I have a limited number of free subscriptions that I will make available to those who otherwise could not join the discussion.

Affiliate Links

Please note that from time to time, I may include external links to books and other goods referenced in my writings. These may be affiliate links where I earn a small portion of any sales generated.
